CANTON, Mass. — Jury deliberations began Tuesday in the murder trial of Karen Read, the woman accused of killing her Boston police officer boyfriend last year.

Read, 44, of Mansfield, Massachusetts, is charged with second-degree murder in the death of John O'Keefe. Prosecutors allege that Read struck O'Keefe with her car after a night of drinking, then left him to die outside a house party in Canton.

The defense maintains that Read was not driving the car that night and that O'Keefe's death was an accident. Read's attorney, Alan Jackson, has argued that a third person was driving the vehicle and that Read was only trying to help O'Keefe.
